Foot ulcer

Writer's picture: Nicola PezaroNicola Pezaro

This is an issue that can be both challenging and distressing. Foot ulcers are sores or wounds that occur on the feet, often as a result of prolonged pressure, poor circulation or diabetes. They can lead to serious complications if not properly managed. So let’s delve into the key details!

Causes-

  1. Diabetes: High blood sugar levels can damage nerves and reduce blood flow, leading to neuropathy and increased risk of ulcers.

  2. Poor circulation: conditions like peripheral artery disease can reduce blood flow to the feet, making healing difficult.

  3. Pressure; prolonged pressure from ill fitting shoes or prolonged standing can cause skin breakdown.

  4. Infections: Bacterial or fungal infections can exacerbate existing wounds.

    Symptoms-

Redness or swelling around the sore, pain or tenderness in the affected area, drainage or pus. Foul odor.

Treatment-

  1. Wound care: keeping the ulcer clean and protected is crucial. Use saline solution or sterile dressings.

  2. offloading: Reduce pressure on the ulcer through special shoes or orthotic devices can promote healing.

  3. Medication: Antibiotics may be necessary if an infection is present.

  4. Managing underlying conditions: controlling blood sugar levels and improving circulation are vital components of treatment.

    Prevention-

Regular foot checks. Especially for those with diabetes, inspecting feet daily can catch issues early. Proper footwear. Invest in well fitted shoes that provide support and cushioning. Moisturizing. Keeping the skin hydrated can prevent cracks and sores.
