Writer's picture: Nicola PezaroNicola Pezaro

A fungal nail infection aka, onychomycosis, occurs when fungi invade the nail bed, often leading to changes in colour, thickness and texture of the nail. It can affect both fingernails and toenails, but toenails are more commonly affected due to their environment.

Causes:

Fungi types, the most common culprits are dermatophytes, but yeasts and non-dermatophyte molds can also cause infections.

Moist environments, fungi thrive in warm damp places , which is why swimming pools, locker rooms and poorly ventilated shoes can be breeding grounds.

Nail trauma, any injury to the nail can make it easier for fungi to invade.

Underlying conditions, conditions like diabetes, weakened immune systems or poor circulation can increase susceptibility.

Symptoms

Discoloration, nails may turn white, yellow or brown.

Thickness, infected nails often become thicker and may crumble or chip easily.

Distortion, the shape of the nail may change, and it can lift away from the nail bed.

Pain in some cases, it can cause discomfort or pain, particularly if the infection is severe.

If you suspect you have fungal nail infection it is wise to consult a professional for advice and a treatment plan.
